Sam started training in Yoshinkan Aikido in November 2013 and originally had wanted to learn some self-defence. He felt that the principles of Aikido such as learning to coordinate your entire body to maximise your energy and to learn to use your opponent's force against them made sense to him physically. Since then he has found Aikido to be a real benefit and the basic principles can be applied to improve performance in many other things. He was awarded Shodan (1st Dan) and his Level 6 (Dai Roku) instructor’s certificate in December of 2018. In February 2023 he was promoted to Nidan and level 5 (Dai Go) instructor.
